Exercises
1
Invert: "If I had realised the problem, I would have fixed it."
Type 3 inversion: remove "if", move "had" to front, subject follows.
2
Invert: "If she were more patient, she would succeed."
Type 2 inversion: remove "if", move "were" to front.
3
Write a mixed conditional: past action, present result.
Mixed: If + past perfect (past) → would + infinitive (present result).
4
Replace "if" with "but for": "If it had not been for his support, I would have given up."
"But for" = "If it had not been for" — a formal way to express a negative condition.
5
Replace "if" with "provided that": "If you arrive before 9am, you will get a seat."
"Provided that" = "if and only if" — often used in formal conditions.
6
Rewrite as inverted mixed: "If they had planned carefully, they would be in a better position now."
Mixed inverted: "Had + subject + past participle" for the past clause.
