Formal letters at C1

C1 formal letters must demonstrate high register, precise vocabulary, and complex grammar including conditionals, indirect questions, and hedged requests.

Structure
Greeting → Purpose → Body (2–3 paragraphs) → Action requested → Closing
Greeting
Dear Mr / Ms [Surname], or Dear Sir or Madam,
Closing
Yours sincerely (named) / Yours faithfully (Dear Sir/Madam)
Length
140–190 words

C1-level formal phrases

Opening
I am writing with regard to… / I am writing in response to…
Indirect requests
I would be grateful if you could… / I wonder if it would be possible to…
Conditional
Should you require further information, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Complaint
I wish to draw your attention to… / I am writing to express my concern…
Application
I am writing to apply for… / I believe my qualifications make me a strong candidate…
Contractions are never used. Avoid 'I want' — use 'I would like'. Avoid 'can you' — use 'could you' or 'would you be able to'.

Common pitfalls

Wrong closing
Yours sincerely with Dear Sir/Madam (should be Yours faithfully)
Wrong greeting
Dear Sir/Madam when you know the name (should be Dear Mr Jones)
Contractions
Don’t, can’t, I’m — all forbidden
Vague language
I want to ask about… → I am writing to enquire about…
