The Verb Avoir — To Have

Avoir — Present Tense

The verb avoir (to have) is irregular and very common. Memorise these six forms.

Avoir with Un/Une — Indefinite Article

To say you have something, use avoir + un/une/des.

J'ai un chien. (I have a dog.)
Elle a une sœur. (She has a sister.)
Ils ont des livres. (They have books.)

Avoir — Negative: de/d'

In a negative sentence, un/une/des changes to de/d' (before vowel).

J'ai un chat. → Je n'ai pas de chat.
Il a des amis. → Il n'a pas d'amis.
Rule: ne…pas → noun gets de/d', never un/une/des.
