Tell a compelling story with structure, tension and vivid detail
A narrative essay tells a true or imagined story to make a point or explore an experience. Unlike creative fiction, it has an evident meaning or lesson. The story serves as evidence for a larger idea.
Open by placing the reader in the moment. Use the imperfect for background/description and the indefinite for events.
Create tension through pacing — short sentences accelerate the pace; longer ones slow it down. Use time markers to push the story forward.
The climax is the emotional peak. Use sensory detail (sight, sound, smell, touch) to make it vivid. Show — don't just tell.
End by resolving the tension and offering a reflection — the meaning behind the story. Link back to the opening for a satisfying circular structure.
