Combining past tenses on a holiday postcard
An advanced postcard uses all three past tenses: indefinido (what you did), imperfecto (what it was like), and perfecto (what you have just done / recently).
Ayer visitamos la catedral — indefinido (completed excursion)
El interior era impresionante — imperfecto (what it was like)
Esta mañana hemos desayunado en el mercado — perfecto (today / still in this holiday)
Choose the tense based on time frame, not just on what happened.
Indefinido → ayer / el lunes / la semana pasada → Ayer comimos en un restaurante local.
Imperfecto → ongoing background → La comida era deliciosa y el ambiente muy acogedor.
Perfecto → hoy / esta mañana / todavía en el viaje → Hoy hemos subido a la montaña.
Use the imperfecto to paint a vivid picture of atmosphere, weather, and feelings.
El paisaje era espectacular.
Hacía un calor sofocante, pero merecía la pena. (It was sweltering but worth it.)
El pueblo parecía sacado de un cuadro. (The village looked like something from a painting.)
Use quedarse + adjective for reactions and me/nos pareció for impressions.
Nos quedamos sin palabras. (We were speechless.)
Me pareció increíble. (It seemed incredible to me.)
Fue una experiencia que no olvidaremos.
Add a future plan and close with a warm sign-off.
Mañana pensamos ir a… / Nos queda un día más.
Te cuento todo a la vuelta. (I'll tell you everything when I get back.)
