Connotation

Derogatory
showing a critical or disrespectful attitude
Euphemism
a mild or indirect word used in place of one that seems too harsh
Loaded language
words that carry strong emotional associations to influence the reader
Examples
"Home" has warm connotations that "house" does not share.
The review contained several derogatory remarks about the author.

Understatement
deliberately describing something as less significant than it is
Irony
expressing meaning through language that normally means the opposite
Pejorative
expressing disapproval or contempt in the meaning of a word
Implication
something suggested or hinted at rather than stated directly
Examples
"It was a bit chilly" is an understatement for -20°C.
"What lovely weather!" said with irony during a storm.

Nuance
a subtle difference in meaning, tone, or feeling
Register
the level of formality in language suited to a particular context
Examples
The translation failed to capture the nuances of the original text.
Formal academic writing requires a different register to casual speech.
