The -ing Form

After verbs · after prepositions · meaning change

The -ing form: four uses

The -ing form (gerund) functions as a noun. It can be the subject of a sentence, the object of a verb, or follow a preposition.

As subject

After certain verbs

After prepositions
She's good at solving problems. / I'm thinking of leaving.
After "go" for activities

Verbs followed by -ing

These always take the gerund — never the infinitive

mind (in questions/negatives)

thinking of/about
I'm thinking of moving.
before / after
Before leaving, check all the doors. / After eating, we went for a walk.
