What is the past simple?

The past simple describes completed actions in the past — events that started AND finished.

Finished action
I visited Paris last summer.
Sequence of events
She woke up, had breakfast, and went to work.
Past habit / state
When I was a child, I lived in a small village.
Time signals
yesterday · last week · in 2020 · two days ago · when I was young

Regular verbs — add -ed

Most verbs + -ed
work → worked · play → played · visit → visited
Verb ends in -e: + d
live → lived · arrive → arrived · use → used
Verb ends in consonant + y: -ied
study → studied · try → tried · cry → cried
Verb ends CVC: double + ed
stop → stopped · plan → planned

Irregular verbs — memorise!

go → went
I went to the cinema.
have → had
She had a great day.
see → saw
We saw a film.
do → did
They did their homework.
come → came
He came home late.
eat → ate
I ate lunch at 1pm.
take → took
She took the bus.
be → was / were
I was tired. They were happy.

Negative — didn't + base verb

subject + didn't + base verb
Regular
I didn't work yesterday. (NOT didn't worked)
Irregular
She didn't go to school. (NOT didn't went)
"To be" — different
I wasn't happy. They weren't there.
After "didn't", always use the base verb, never the past form.

Questions — Did + subject + base verb

Did + subject + base verb?
Yes/No questions
Did you go to the party? Did she call?
Wh- questions
What did you do? Where did he live?
"To be" questions
Was she at home? Were they late?
Short answers
Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.

Common mistakes

I goed to the park.
I went to the park.
"go" is irregular: went
She didn't went to school.
She didn't go to school.
after didn't → base verb
Where you went yesterday?
Where did you go yesterday?
question: did + subject + base
I studyed English last year.
I studied English last year.
consonant + y → -ied
