What are location phrases?

Some places are described by fixed phrases using in, on, or at + a location. Learn these as set expressions.

in

Regions of a country or city

Use "in the" + direction

in the north
Edinburgh is in the north of the UK.
in the south
Seville is in the south of Spain.
in the east
Valencia is in the east of Spain.
in the west
Galicia is in the west of Spain.
in the centre
Madrid is in the centre of Spain.

Top, bottom, end

All use "at the"

at the top
The headline is at the top of the page.
at the bottom
Sign your name at the bottom of the form.
at the end
The exit is at the end of the corridor.
at the beginning
Start at the beginning of the chapter.

Left, right, corner

Different preposition for each

on the left
The bank is on the left.
on the right
The pharmacy is on the right.
on the corner
There's a café on the corner of two streets.
in the corner
A plant is in the corner of the room.
Tricky: "on the corner" = streets meeting outdoors. "in the corner" = inside a room or container.

Common mistakes

My name is in the top of the page.
My name is at the top of the page.
"at the top" is the fixed phrase
There's a chair on the corner of the room.
There's a chair in the corner of the room.
inside a room → in the corner
Madrid is on the centre of Spain.
Madrid is in the centre of Spain.
