Writing a Personal Introduction

One of the first things you'll do in Spanish is introduce yourself! A personal introduction tells people about who you are, where you're from, what you do, and what you like.

Hola, me llamo Juan. Soy de México. Soy ingeniero. Me encanta el fútbol.

Hi, my name is Juan. I'm from Mexico. I'm an engineer. I love soccer.

Let's learn how to structure a clear, polished personal introduction.

Part 1: Greeting & Name

Start with a warm greeting and introduce yourself:

Hola, me llamo [your name]. (Hi, my name is...)

Me llamo [name]. (My name is...)

Soy [name]. (I am...)

Examples:

  • Hola, me llamo María.
  • Me llamo Carlos García.
  • Soy Ana.

Part 2: Origin & Age

Tell people where you're from and how old you are:

Soy de [place]. (I'm from...)

Tengo [number] años. (I'm ... years old.)

Examples:

  • Soy de España. (I'm from Spain.)
  • Soy de la Ciudad de México. (I'm from Mexico City.)
  • Tengo veinticinco años. (I'm 25 years old.)
  • Tengo treinta años. (I'm 30 years old.)

Part 3: Profession & Study

Talk about what you do for work or study:

Soy [profession]. (I'm a...)

Trabajo como [profession]. (I work as a...)

Estudio [subject]. (I study...)

Examples:

  • Soy profesor. (I'm a teacher.)
  • Trabajo como ingeniero. (I work as an engineer.)
  • Estudio medicina. (I study medicine.)
  • Soy estudiante de idiomas. (I'm a language student.)

Part 4: Family & Interests

Share something personal about your family and what you like:

Tengo [family members]. (I have...)

Me encanta / Me gusta [activity]. (I love / I like...)

En mi tiempo libre, [activity]. (In my free time, I...)

Examples:

  • Tengo dos hermanos y una hermana. (I have two brothers and a sister.)
  • Me encanta jugar al fútbol. (I love playing soccer.)
  • Me gusta leer libros. (I like reading books.)
  • En mi tiempo libre, cocino y viajo. (In my free time, I cook and travel.)

Putting It All Together

Complete introduction example:

"Hola, me llamo Sofia. Soy de Argentina. Tengo veintiocho años. Soy ingeniera de software. Tengo dos hermanos. Me encanta viajar y pasar tiempo con mi familia. En mi tiempo libre, leo libros de misterio."

Hi, my name is Sofia. I'm from Argentina. I'm 28 years old. I'm a software engineer. I have two brothers. I love traveling and spending time with my family. In my free time, I read mystery books.

Structure: Name → Origin → Age → Profession → Family → Interests

Tips for Writing a Good Introduction

  • Start with a greeting. "Hola" shows friendliness.
  • Use complete sentences. Don't just list facts.
  • Check subject-verb agreement. Yo soy, tú eres, él/ella es...
  • Use correct verb forms. Tengo (present tense), not tinha or tenía.
  • Connect your ideas. Use y (and), pero (but), porque (because).
  • Keep it positive. Focus on what you do, not what you don't do.
  • End warmly. Optional: "Mucho gusto" (Pleased to meet you) or "Espero conocerte" (Hope to meet you).
