Present Progressive — Practice — Answer Key

Practice

  1. hablando Explanation: -AR verbs form the gerund with -ando: habl + ando = hablando
  2. estoy Explanation: The present progressive always uses ESTAR (not ser): yo estoy comiendo. "Está" is the él/ella form.
  3. viviendo Explanation: -IR verbs form the gerund with -iendo: viv + iendo = viviendo. The gerund never changes for person.
  4. leyendo Explanation: When an -er/-ir stem ends in a vowel, -iendo becomes -yendo: le + yendo = leyendo.
  5. estamos Explanation: Only estar is conjugated in the progressive. For nosotros: estamos → Estamos estudiando.
  6. Ella está durmiendo Explanation: Dormir has an irregular gerund (o → u): durmiendo. And the progressive needs estar, never ser.
  7. haciendo Explanation: Hacer is regular in the gerund: hac + iendo = haciendo. (What are you doing?)
  8. Trabajo en una escuela Explanation: Spanish uses the simple present for habits and general facts. The progressive is only for actions in progress right now.
