Speaking Practice 1

4 parts · 12-17 minutes · Paired format

Part 1 (2-3 minutes)

Phase 1: Interlocutor asks each candidate basic questions.

Interlocutor says: "Good morning/afternoon. What's your name? ... And what's your name?"
Where do you live?
Do you work or are you a student?

Phase 2: Interlocutor asks each candidate a couple of questions about everyday life.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Tell me about a good friend of yours.
What kind of music do you listen to?
How do you usually get to school/work?

Part 2 (2-3 minutes)

In this part, each candidate is given one colour photograph to describe for about 1 minute.

Interlocutor: "Candidate A, here is your photograph. It shows people enjoying a meal together. Please tell us what you can see in the photograph."

Part 3 (3 minutes)

In this part, candidates talk to each other about a situation with the help of some pictures.

Interlocutor: "A school is planning to organize a weekend trip for its students. Here are some ideas for where they could go. Talk together about the different places they could visit and say which would be the most interesting for the students."

A historic castle
An amusement park with rollercoasters
A national park for hiking and camping
A large city for sightseeing and shopping

Part 4 (3 minutes)

In this part, the interlocutor asks questions related to the topic in Part 3 to encourage further discussion between candidates.

Do you like going on school trips? Why/Why not?
What is the best place you have ever visited on a trip?
Some people say it's better to travel with family than with a school group. What do you think?
Do you prefer visiting cities or being in nature when you go on a trip?
Is it important to learn about the history of a place when you visit it?
