About the PET

What is the PET?

The Cambridge B1 Preliminary (formerly PET) is an English exam at the B1 level. It proves you can deal with everyday written and spoken English at an intermediate level.

Exam structure

• Reading — 45 minutes · 6 parts · 32 questions (25%)
• Writing — 45 minutes · 2 parts (25%)
• Listening — 30 minutes · 4 parts · 25 questions (25%)
• Speaking — 12-17 minutes · 4 parts · paired (25%)

Scoring

PET uses the Cambridge English Scale from 120-170. A score of 140+ is a pass at B1; 153+ earns distinction and corresponds to B2.
